Lynsey Jackson - Cakes by Lynz

Hi, I’m Lynsey

I’m so happy you’re here. I thought I would share a little backstory on my caking adventures and how Cakes by Lynz came to be, but first let me introduce myself; I’m Lynsey aka Lynz, I’m a self taught cake decorator from the UK and I live in East Sussex with my Husband and my baby son. I’ve been making cakes now for almost 20 years. I remember the first time I made a batch of cupcakes, I was hooked! I started as many of you probably did, just baking for family and friends. After a while of baking cupcakes and cakes I started experimenting with fondant and this is where my love of cake decorating was born; practicing different techniques, whilst reading and watching every tutorial I could find.

To cut a long story short I actually studied graphic design and multimedia and in 2012 after working as a designer for many years I set up my own wedding stationery company, making couples wedding invitations and other stationery for their big day.

At the time I’d been making cakes for years and needing a little more income I took the plunge, got my kitchen signed off by the council and started selling my cakes. I actually continued to sell my cakes for the next 5 years, making all types of cakes, but mainly wedding cakes alongside the stationery. As the stationery company grew, I made the really tough decision to stop selling my cakes but the Cakes by Lynz story definitely does not end there, it’s actually only the beginning of what I’m doing now…

When I was first learning to make cakes I used to say that I learnt through the ‘School of YouTube’. I would spend hours watching all the tutorials I could and way back in August 2011 with a lot of encouragement I filmed my first video tutorial and uploaded it to YouTube. It was actually another 2 years before I uploaded another video, but this was the start of the Cakes by Lynz YouTube channel. Over the next few years I uploaded tutorials here and there, but when I stopped making cakes to sell the Cakes by Lynz YouTube channel gave me an outlet to keep doing what I loved, and once again cakes and the YouTube channel became my hobby. I could also make the cakes I wanted, which allowed me to share all the tips and tricks that I’d learnt and adapted along the way. As the channel grew, so did my confidence and my love of uploading videos.

In 2020, like for so many other small businesses, Covid changed the vision I had for my wedding stationery company. Suddenly there were no weddings or parties, but I’d actually been splitting my time 50/50 at this point between my company and my YouTube channel and that really leads me to what I’m doing now, working full time on the Cakes by Lynz YouTube channel (that and now also being a Mum, which I’ve come to realise is a full time job in itself, lol).

Over the years the Cakes by Lynz YouTube channel has continued to grow both in the amount of tutorials now available and also the amount of people following along. I am so appreciative of everyone who watches the tutorials, comments and subscribes to the channel and across all my social media. This website is a combination of my video tutorials, recipes, reviews and all my cake adventures. I love nothing more than designing cakes, testing out techniques and just trying to figure out the best way to do something, in the hope that I will help someone who is on their own cake adventure.
Thank you so much for reading about my journey and I really hope you enjoy following the blog!
