Last week on my Instagram stories (@cakesbylynz) I asked what animal topper you would like to see next and so many people said a bear. So this week I’m showing you how to make this cute furry teddy bear topper. This would be great for a birthday cake, a baby shower or a christening cake!

You can watch the step by step video tutorial below ⇩

The teddy bear is made from mixing fondant with some gumpaste. The gumpaste (I used squires floral paste) allows the fondant to dry firmer, so the character will keep it’s shape a lot better. My top tip when making characters ifs make sure you let the body and head firm up slightly before putting them together. With characters that have quite a large head the weight of the head can push down on the body making your character sink a little.

To give you an idea of size the bear measured 7cm in height and he’s sitting on a 5 inch cake in the top photo.

Creating the fur

When creating this bear you have two options, you can keep your modelling paste smooth, or cut into it to make him look furry. The fur does take a little time, but I love how cute the fur effect makes the bear look. I created the fur by chopping in with a small pair of scissors, making sure I went in different directions. I then used my Dresden tool in circular motions over the top to push the cuts, taking away the harsh cut edges.

I really hope you like the little bear topper and enjoy giving him a try. If there is another topper you want me to try just let me know in the comments.
