Gumpaste Shoe Cake Topper Tutorial + Templates

I can’t quite believe it, but this is my 100th video tutorial!! When I uploaded my first video I remember being so nervous and scared. I mean I still am nervous every time I upload a video, hoping people will like it, but to think we are now at 100 tutorials is amazing. I have loved making them all so I really hope the videos are helpful and there is something you might want to make in one of them. If you are new to the blog then you can head over to the tutorials section to take a look.

So for this weeks video tutorial I was really inspired by the first video I ever uploaded to the Cakes by Lynz YouTube channel. It was a little pair of shoe toppers to add to your cupcakes. So I thought for this video I would create another pair of shoes, but this time a larger pair which would be perfect to add onto the top of a cake. So if you want to see the tutorial make sure you scroll to the bottom of the post and click the video…

The shoes themselves are made from gumpaste (or in this case Squires floral paste, which is the same thing). I needed something firmer than just fondant as they needed to keep their shape and dry solid. If you don’t have gumpaste you could also try modelling paste or add some tylo powder to your fondant. The shoes measure around 4 inches in length once they are made and I spent a while getting the templates right, so we get this pretty peep toes shoe with a stiletto heel.

The main thing I love about these shoes is that no moulds were used. It was just templates that I created which I printed out onto card and cutout. If you are looking for moulds, there are some amazing moulds out there, especially for the heel, but I realise these are not always available in some parts of the world. So this is a design you can model yourself.

You can DOWNLOAD THE TEMPLATE FOR THE SHOES HERE. Just download and print it out!

In the tutorial I show you how to model the heel, use a little foldable stand to create the shape of your shoe, add the body of the shoe and finish it off with a pretty bow. The great thing about these is you can make them in any colour to match the theme of your cake, maybe add black soles or red depending on the style of shoe you are creating. I had so much fun making these and whether you need a single shoe or a pair as I have created they look so pretty on the top of a cake. If you do need a pair, to create the opositte shoe I just flipped the tempalte over and created it in exactly the same way.

I really hope you will love the shoes as much as I do and find it useful if you are looking to make your own pair of shoes. Below is the full step by step guide on how I made them…
