Peach Birdcage & Lace Wedding Cake

This summer was full of wedding cakes, and I wanted to go into more detail about the ideas and techniques behind some of the cakes, starting with this 4 tier peach lace birdcage theme wedding cake.

Now this was one of the cakes I was most nervous and excited about, all at the same time, and the reason for this was because it was actually for my Brother and now Sister In-Law’s wedding cake. I was so excited about their wedding and I wanted to create something they would love and that would match their theme and stationery perfectly…

They had a very vintage theme wedding with birdcages, lace and roses all with a peach theme. The cake itself was made up of a 12 inch lemon cake, 10 inch vanilla & chocolate orange ganache cake, an 8 inch fruit cake and a 6 inch birdcage dummy cake on the top. The reason I chose to use a dummy cake on the top was because we were trying to create the height with the cake, but didn’t want too much cake left over, as everyone was going on holiday after the wedding and I would have been left to eat it.

Using the dummy cake worked out really well as I was able to start decorating this before making the rest of the cakes. To create the colour on the birdcage I covered the dummy cake with white icing/fondant and before adding all the details to the birdcage I airbrushed it with peach and apricot Kroma color airbrush colour to create a gradual gradient going down the surface. I then created lengths of round icing using an extruding gun and placed these down and around the birdcage shape to look like the wires. One of my favourite parts about the birdcage was the 3D birds which sat on the outside of the birdcage. These really stood out and brought the whole theme to life.

The lace around the cake was edible lace and I had searched for ages to find a lace mat which I thought looked dainty and realistic. As soon as I saw it I knew it was what I was looking for, the lace mat was the eternity mat by Cake Lace. I coloured the lace mixture in peach before putting it onto the mat and baking it in the oven. I then used a knife to straighten the bottom edge to run along the edge of the cake tier as this design mirrored itself on both edges.

I finished off the cake with gumpaste flowers, including different shades of peach roses, hydrangeas, buds and green leaves. It was a lovely wedding and I was a really proud sister.

A summer of cakes and going forward…

Wow! What a summer full of cakes. This summer I have had the pleasure of working on so many wedding cakes, it has been amazing. Each one has been totally different and unique to match the amazing wedding themes the Bride and Grooms have had. There have been birdcages, dragons, lilies, cupcakes, lace, ruffles and so much more. I have loved every minute of creating them.

Below are some photos of the different wedding cakes, and there are loads more photos in my wedding cake gallery. I will also be putting up some posts on some of the individual cakes to explain more about them soon…

Over the past two years I have been creating a lot more wedding cakes alongside matching wedding stationery which some of you may have seen with the watermark The Little Touches. I have loved combining both the design and cake making together and it has been fantastic watching The Little Touches grow alongside Cakes by Lynz.

Going Forward…

This summer has been so much fun but also so much work. A huge amount of time goes into making wedding and birthday cakes and combined with the wedding stationery, it has made me think a lot about the future as the workload continues to grow. Going forward I am worried that I don’t have the time needed to dedicate to each cake. It has been a really hard decision for me to make but I have decided to take a break making both wedding and birthday cakes for a while and concentrate on the stationery side of The Little Touches. So unfortunately I am so sorry, but this means that I won’t be taking any new orders for a while.

Although this has been a really hard decision, I really hope that a lot of you reading this will be excited about the plans that I have for Cake by Lynz. I LOVE cake making way too much just to stop doing it so I really want to create more tutorials, explaining how I do each step of the cakes, and hopefully pass on some of my techniques to you.

From the 1st October (so only a few weeks to wait) I will be putting up video tutorials every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. These will be on decorating cakes and cupcakes, creating gumpaste flowers, piping, modelling and so much more. I have so many things I want to share with you and it would be great if you could let me know what you would like to see. I have 4 video tutorials on YouTube at the moment which you can find in my tutorials section of this website. Combined, these have had over 130,000 views which is absolutely amazing and to think of that many people watching my tutorials is mind blowing. Please subscribe to my YouTube channel to ensure you don’t miss any of the tutorial videos I’m planning.

So I really hope that you enjoy all these new videos and I would love for you to let me know what you think. Also I would like to thank everyone who I have made a cake for over the past few years. I have loved every one that I have made and your support and kind words that you have given me is more than I could ever have wished for, and I only hope that you check back to read my blog and see the creations that I make for the videos or just for fun. Vintage Cupcake Tower

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to create a vintage style cupcake tower for Rachael & John’s vintage style wedding at the beautiful Chilston Park in Kent. The cupcakes were designed in the same colour palette as the stationery, which included a rose and peony design with hints of ivory, lilac, pale blue and pale pink. The cupcake tower had 5 different style cupcakes and the whole tower had over 150 in total.

The tower was made up of domed cupcakes with handmade roses on the top, domed cupcakes with a brush embroidery design, pillow embossed cucpakes, mini rose cupcakes and mini buttercream swirl cupcakes with little coloured flowers. I loved how all the cupcakes, even though they were all different came together and looked so pretty.

The tower had a 6inch cutting cake on the top which was all fruit cake. I followed the same style as the brush embroidery cupcakes and pipped this all the way around onto the icory icing to tie it all together. The cutting cake was finished off with a large pink handmade gumpaste peony on the top.

I loved how the tower all came together and one of my favour bits were the ivory cupcake wrappers which I added to 50 of the domed cupcakes. The tower looked lovely all set up in the very vintage style setting. Ivory Ruffle Rose Wedding Cake

I had the pleasure to sit down with Laura and Umit whilst they were in the planning stages of their wedding and go through all their ideas. Their wedding was last Saturday at the lovely Orangdry at the Turkey Mill in Maidstone. They had some great ideas and I was so happy to be able to create their invitations, table names, table plan and wedding cake for them…

I was so excited for them to see the cake on the day. The cake was a 3 tier wedding cake made up of a 6 inch carrot cake top tier, 8 inch lemon cake middle tier and 10 inch chocolate bottom tier. The cake was covered in ivory icing and decorated with a ruffle rose design. The cake was then finished off with a thick gold ribbon bow and cute bunting topper which Laura had given me to add on.

I was really pleased with how the ruffles looked and it had a really pretty feel to it. At the venue the cake was placed on a white porcelain cake stand which gave it extra height. It really was a pleasure creating everything for Laura and Umit, they are an amazing couple and I wish them all the happiness as Mr & Mrs Batman.

Bronze Award at the Cake International Awards 2014

A few weeks ago I took part in my first Cake International competition which was held at the London Excel center. My entry was in the Wedding Cake category and the cake needed to be 3 tiers or more. The cake that I entered was a 5 tier cake with 2 different height tiers combined in a purple / fushia pink colour scheme…

When designing the cake I wanted to create something very pretty, but bold. I created handmade roses, peonies, hydrangeas, lilacs and freesia buds in a combination of light pinks, fushia pinks, purples and lilacs. I really wanted them to compliment each other. The flowers were placed on the top in a dome and at the bottom of the board. I also created a large purple gumpaste bow on the front which I wanted to look like had been tied from material draped around the tiers. I was really happy with how the material looking gumpaste turned out (although it was extremely challenging at times to get the folds just right).

I really loved being part of the competition and it was amazing seeing all the visitors to the show looking at my cake and I got really lovely feedback. I really didn’t expect to be awarded anything, but I was really delighted to get a Bronze Award. There were things I could of improved on, and the Cake International competitions have such a high level of amazing cakes, so I will definitely be entering the Birmingham show at the end of the year to try and improve on my award. I really love the colours and tier combination of the cake that I created and I hope you all do too.
