Pink Cupcakes

I was so excited to make these cupcakes, just before Christmas I ordered the Wilton 2D pipping tip, so when my friend asked me to make her some cupcakes to take to work I new exactly what to do. The tip is really good. The effect that it gives is really pretty. I applied a small pink butterfly to the cupcake to hide where the buttercream ends. I teamed these cupcakes with some frilly flower cupcakes and some pink and white dome cupcakes with bows, which can be seen in my gallery.

Christmas Bauble Cupcakes

This Christmas I decided to create cupcakes that looked like baubles when they were in their boxes. I had seem images of them before on flickr and I have been wanted to try them out for ages, they looked really effective when they are put in the boxes.

The technique that I used to create these was to create a dome like shape with buttercream on top of the cupcake. With a cookie cutter I then cut out a piece of icing and placed this over the top. I added lustre dust in either pearl or blue just to make them sparkle. I previously made a tutorial which can be found here showing the method that I used. The silver part of the ornament is fully edible. I created this by rolling out a ball of icing / fondant and flattening it down on either side. I then used a 5 petal flower cutter to cut out a flat piece of icing and glued this to the top to create the frilly pattern. The get the silver colour I mixed some alcohol with some silver lustre dust and painted it on. I did try using some silver edible paint but it was so messy and seemed to dry on the paint brush before I even had time to paint it on. The only thing that was really tricky was the hook on the top, it was really fiddly and very fragile in the boxes.

There are more images of these cupcakes in my gallery, so please take a look.

New Baby Cupcakes

I have been meaning to post these cupcakes for ages. In September a new member of the family arrived. My new baby nephew Bryce. As a welcome I decided to make the family cupcakes to celebrate. The cupcakes were chocolate flavoured with blue / green vanilla buttercream. I then cut out small pieces of icing which I had embossed with an embossing mat, on to these I placed icing / fondant baby item, there was a dummy, some booties, some buttons, a teddy on a blanket, a bottle and my favourite a little train.

Check out my cupcake gallery for some more photos of these new baby cakes.

Gumpaste Shoe Tutorial

I have been wanting to put more tutorials up recently. I have watched some great tutorials which have tought me so much, so I decided to make a video tutorial of my own which hopefully people can find useful. I have put together a tutorial on how to make the small gumpaste shoes which I put on some of my cupcakes recently. People have given me some really lovely feedback about these cakes, so I thought this would make a perfect tutorial. To watch the tutorial just click here or go into the tutorials section and take a look.

This is my first video tutorial and I hope you like it, if you have any comments or suggestions let me know.

Gumpaste Shoe Cupcakes

Last week I was meeting up with my friends because it was one of their birthdays and somehow they always seem to miss out on my cakes, so I made a special effort to bake up a few cakes before we all went out to see her. She works in a shoe shop so I really wanted to make her some really pretty shoe cakes.

The cakes are vanilla cupcakes with a vanilla buttercream on top. The shoe cakes have a circle of embossed icing / fondant on top for the shoes to sit on. The shoes were about 3.5 – 4cm in length and were modelled out of gumpaste, I found a template on line for shoes and modified this a bit for the size. I then printed this out on card and was able to cut around the little templates. I have to admit it was quite fiddly, but they looked just like a set of doll shoes once I had finished, I have put a close up image below…
