Recently it was my mums birthday so I wanted to create something really pretty for her, and I really wanted to test out some new moulds that I had brought a few weeks previously, so a bow cake it was…

The cake was a 6inch sponge cake on an 8inch board. I just love how pretty this cake became when I used my new moulds. The mould were were called ‘Lace Maker 3 Inch Flower Spray Mould’ which I brought from my local cake supply shop. To create the lace I used icing / fondant to push into the mould. The kit comes in 3 parts, the mould itself and then 2 extra relief moulds to push into the fondant to create the lace. I used these relief moulds to push into the icing / fondant that I had used to cover the board, this gave a great effect for the cake to sit on. The icing could be slightly fiddly and I ended up cutting the outside of the shape out by hand.

The bow was made from icing / fondant and in hindsight I would probably use 50/50 gumpaste and fondant in the future as it was quite a warm day and I was really worried about the bow flopping over in the heat. Luckly it held its shape for my mum to see it.
