A lady contacted me about creating a number 3 cake for her daughters birthday. She wanted it very pink and sparkly with polka dots and a cat ontop. I suggested Marie from Aristocats with her big pink bow…

I was a little dubious about covering the number cake, as I had found the number 50 cake I had done previously a little tricky. Its crazy give me a carved car cake or a watering can anyday, these number cakes are hard to cover. I even asked for advice in the local cake decorating shop but they just told me they are really hard to do… thanks! I think the key to these number cakes is to keep them low, but in my opinion that doesn’t give you enough cake so I found the best way is to cover the inside bends separately first and then cover the whole thing and if you do get any slight rips as the icing pulls over then neatly match it up to what’s underneath.

I really loved how girly this cake was with the big pink bow on the front, this was made out of icing / fondant and left to set slightly. Marie the cat is made out of a combination of gumpaste and icing / fondant. The gumpaste allowed it to keep its shape and sit up, but by adding half icing it gave me slightly more time to work with before it started setting. Above is an image of the front and back of Marie, I love how she turned out.
