A bit of a late post, but a few weeks ago I made a Halloween themed birthday cake for someone who’s birthday fell on the 31st October. This cake had such a different theme to any cake I had made previously, and was so much fun…

The cake was an 8 inch sponge cake on a 11inch board. I have to admit I spent a long while looking at all the great Halloween cakes on Flickr, which gave me so much inspiration.

It has a main gate and fence running all the way around, with trees and ghosts popping out. Creating the fence seemed to take ages, I covered each individual bit in lustre dust to make it look like metal and there where about 100 pieces (ok a bit of an exaggeration, about 25). On top I made the pumpkins and stones out of coloured icing/fondant and the grave, bats and moon out of gumpaste. The moon was a really tin piece of gumpaste attached to thin pieces of wire which were pushed into the cake to secure it. I really enjoyed making the gravestone, I have to admit along with the flying bats this was my favourite part. After making the plain grey gravestone I was able to use different colours of grey food paste and give it the stone effect. There are some close up images of the different parts in my gallery, so check them out.
