Last week I was asked to create a birthday cake by a friend of mine. I had so much fun with this cake, she wanted a giant golf ball for her boyfriends who really loves golf, and here is the finished cake…

I thought for ages how I was going to make the ball shape for this cake and decided to bake 2 cakes in a large glass pyrex bowl. When the 2 halves were put together the shape was perfect. The cake is covered in white icing / fondant which I put the indentations into. (I looked at pictures of golf balls for ages before I pushed the first dot in, it was very nerve racking hoping they would join up when you got around the whole cake). For the grass this was also icing and I made this by squeezing out 1cm length of green with an extruder clay tool gun. It was definately worth spending the extra time creating the grass like this, I really loved the effect, but it does take a long time. I think real grass grows quicker than the time it took to cover the whole board.

I have put loads more images of this cake in my cake gallery, so please take a look.
